Stop Golden Rice! Network statement: Global Day of Action Against Corporate Control of Food Systems

Our expression, as a collective cause, is first and foremost, a stalwart response of the grassroots movement against the anti-people efforts by transnational corporations in the name of profit. Funded by philanthrocapitalists such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and giant agrochemical TNCs, the multi-million Golden Rice project is a manifestation of this greed. The Network stands resolute in its platform as a broad and inclusive movement to push back and defeat these forms of corporate capture.

With the upcoming UN Food Systems Summit this September 2021, our food systems may take a turn for the worse. With transnational corporations at its helm, there will be no true development and radical change in our food systems to curb hunger and malnutrition; profit-making is taken into utmost consideration before people’s health, environment, and sustainability. So long have these schemes, pandered by deceitful platforms and institutions such as the International Rice Research Institute, paved the way to the pillage of our environment, seeds, knowledge, and resources.

The worsening food systems, coupled with intensifying efforts by TNCs for corporate capture should be met with a strong and unified action from the people. This is the case, after all, networks such as SGRN is a testament that the people will always fight for their rights. Thus, we resound the call for a just, equitable, healthy and sustainable food system as an alternative to the current exploitative, fragile, capital and chemical-intensive, market-driven agricultural system.

Today, on the Global Day of Action against Corporate Control of Food Systems, and despite the challenges of the current health pandemic, we the Stop Golden Rice Network are in solidarity with the millions of farmers and peoples across Asia and the world who continue to resist and fight corporate agenda from the ground to the global public policies. We will assert our sovereignty over seeds, land, technology, and food systems and we amplify our call to defend our rice, and fight for our rights, for the people’s interest, and for our planet!
